Ex-Rangers man gets Old Firm caution despite retiring 14 years ago

Rangers are now winless in six against Old Firm rivals Celtic as they lost 3-0 in Glasgow.

If it wasn’t bad enough to go down to goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Callum McGregor – one of their coaching staff landed himself in hot water.

Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae was a combative midfielder during his career, and also loved getting on the scoresheet.

Spells in England with Millwall, Sunderland, and Wolves, saw nine red cards – although none with the Gers.

He retired in 2010 but despite being off the pitch for so long, his fearsome reputation was on show again 14 years later.

His fiery past came back to the fore in the Old Firm – much to the delight of the Celtic fans.

An incident on the touchline was deemed too much by John Beaton and Philippe Clement’s first-team coach was cautioned.

The yellow card went down a treat at Celtic Park with supporters cheering the decision loudly.

Commentator Ian Crocker was eagle-eyed and saw what happened

He told viewers on Sky Sports: “A yellow card for him which has gone down well in these parts.”

Co-commentator Neil McCann chipped in and said: “He’s no stranger to a yellow card in this fixture surely.”

And ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton added: “Not like him to lose his head.”

Rae saw plenty of cards in his career - and is getting them now as a coach too

Off the pitch, one fan tweeted: “In the end Alex Rae showed more fight than pretty much any of the players.”

After the game, serious questions were being asked about the Rangers side who have lost their last three against Celtic.

Ex-Gers striker Kris Boyd said: “How many of that Rangers team would get in the Celtic team? None. They don’t have any leaders. That was embarrassing.”

Darren Bent boldly states that he would rather sign for any Premier League or Championship side than Rangers

He added: “The Rangers fans right now have had enough, they’ve backed their team from the lower leagues and up.

“They had a chance to kick on when they won the league, all of a sudden Ange Postecoglou arrives, builds something, and kicks on.

“There’s no structure to anything Rangers have done.”
