I’m an architect – these are the mistakes you are making with your bedroom and why I will NEVER have a walk-in wardrobe

An architect has listed the worst mistakes homeowners make when designing their bedrooms  – and why she despises a popular feature most people dream of.

Georgina Wilson, from Sydney, has more than two decades of experience in home design, and has seen many clients make choices they have to correct during future renovations.

She advised against following outdated layout trends, walk-in wardrobes, and using overhead lighting on top of your mirror.

Georgina has also revealed five low-cost home improvements you can make without renovating that will refresh your style. 

‘Never do a walk-in wardrobe,’ Georgina warned, despite the feature being a life-long dream for many women. 

Most homeowners don’t realise how much space they need for a walk-in robe to be worth the wasted space. 

‘A really good walk-in is the same size – or bigger – than a bedroom. They are inherently inefficient,’ she said.

‘Only do this if you have space to burn and are willing to give an entire room to this purpose.’

Georgina also warned against putting cupboards along the longest walls in your bedroom because it will make the space rectangular – which is difficult to style. 

‘The wardrobe should always go along the shorter wall so that you’re left with a more square shaped space to furnish,’ she said.

Another placement mistake homeowners should avoid is putting the wardrobe somewhere where they ‘walk directly into it’ as soon as they enter.

‘I see this all the time, and my only conclusion is that wardrobe placement is an afterthought,’ Georgina said.

In terms of saving space, the architect revealed parents should always consider ‘cloffices’ for their children – a desk built into the side of a closet and wall.

‘A cloffice is the most efficient way of including a desk, particularly in a teenager’s room,’ she said.

In addition to where you place your wardrobe, you also need to think about your mirror. 

‘Never forget to appropriately light your mirror. The same rules apply for vanities. Make sure to have your lighting on either side of the mirror and not directly above your head,’ the architect said.

Having lighting directly above your mirror will make you look harsh and highlight features you may not like.
