In an emotional message, accompanied by footage of the Princess and her young family, she said her illness had given her a “new perspective on everything” and a renewed focus on the “simple yet important things in life”. A long-awaited report has said that European Union governments must spend big on joint defence projects because they can no longer rely on the US for their security. The report said national competition within the bloc’s defence industry had weakened Europe’s ability to act as a cohesive power.
