Paris climate agreement anniversary: energy trends since 2015

Adoption of renewable energy sources has risen since the Paris climate agreement was struck in 2015, when global goals were set for limiting the climb in global temperatures by cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Energy from renewable sources now accounts for 25 per cent of electricity, as shown in these charts of electricity production by source, rebased to 2015, the date of the Paris accord.

At the 2020 anniversary climate summit held on Saturday, co-hosted by the UK and France, UN secretary-general António Guterres highlighted how much further there was to go before the Paris ambition of keeping global warming as close to 1.5C as possible was achieved.

“The commitments made in Paris were far from enough to get there. And even those commitments are not being met,” Mr Guterres said, noting that the world was on course for 3C of warming.
