Veteran Conservative MP killed at constituency surgery

Sir David Amess, a veteran Conservative MP, has died after being stabbed multiple times at a surgery in his Essex constituency on Friday lunchtime.

The 69-year-old, who served as a Tory MP since 1983 and represented the Southend West seat since 1997, was holding the event at the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea when a man entered the building and stabbed him several times.

Essex Police said on Friday that a man had been arrested “on suspicion of murder” after the stabbing and that a man later died.

The Reuters news agency quoted local councillor John Lamb as saying Amess was “stabbed several times”.

A heavy police presence has also been reported in the area.
