Adele‘s 2011 album 21 is the biggest selling UK album ever, BBC Radio 2’s Official All-time Female Artist Chart revealed on Saturday. 

The news comes as after the singer, 33, released her new single Easy On Me on Friday and ahead of her upcoming album 30, which is set for release on 19 November  

BBC Radio 2 host Jo Whiley said of the news: ‘Adele has enchanted us from the very beginning with her voice, her songs and her personality.

‘When she writes, she writes from the heart and that’s why her music resonates with so many people. 

‘She tells it like it is, whether onstage to thousands of people at Glastonbury or through the songs on her albums, and that’s why she is so loved and a global superstar. 

‘She sings it like she means it – because she does. She also has a phenomenal voice and hasn’t changed from the very first Live Lounge I did with her at Radio 1 to when I spoke to her just before she headlined Glasto.

The chart of the top 30 best-selling albums by women is based on UK sales and downloads as compiled by The Official Charts Company.

Adele’s 21 achieved 5,007,000 sales and it was closely followed by Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black with 3,912,000 units sold.

The remaining released in the top five include The Immaculate Collection by Madonna (3,771,000), Come On Over by Shania Twain (3,411,000) and 25 by Adele (3,364,000).

The singer left her fans in tears as she finally released her first new track in five years – which reflects on the pain she felt amid her divorce from husband Simon Konecki. 

The highly-anticipated single, released on YouTube at midnight on Friday ahead of her album 30 set to drop next month, soon shot to YouTube’s top trending clip.

Along with the music video – which sees the star pack up her house and drive away, as pages of sheet music flutter out of the windows onto the road – the single went down a storm with fans who took to Twitter to claim it was giving them ‘goosebumps’ and making them ‘sob’.
