Barry Hall breaks down in tears as he reveals how his wife Lauren Brant helped him after growing up in a ‘dysfunctional’ household and dealing with ‘anger issues’ and ‘demons’

Barry Hall broke down in tears as he opened up about his wife Lauren Brant during Tuesday night’s episode of SAS Australia.

The AFL star, 45, became emotional as he revealed how Lauren has helped him deal with his on-field aggression after growing up in a ‘dysfunctional’ household.

‘Lauren is an amazing mum, amazing wife. She has just helped me so much. We are all pretty lucky,’ Barry said as he broke down.

He also spoke about his childhood and how he has had to deal with ‘demons’ as an angry young man.

‘My childhood growing up was a little dysfunctional. There wasn’t much love. I would go home to dad and brag about the fights I would get in and you’d see a little smirk on his face,’ he explained.

He added that he got in fights for his father’s approval and wouldn’t come home, ‘Until you had a couple of bruises on you.’

‘And he’d ask what happened. And if he wasn’t happy with that, you’d have to go back. Being a dad myself now, I just… I can’t get my head around it,’ Barry added.

Barry went on to say: ‘I was fighting a lot of demons… I missed up a few times and eventually got sacked by a football club. I had an anger issue. It took me a long time to reprogram who I was.’

Barry’s reputation for aggression on-field saw him miss numerous weeks of his AFL career through suspensions.

In 2008, commercials starring Barry were pulled from the air after he viciously struck West Coast Eagles player Brent Staker in the chin with his closed fist while playing for the Sydney Swans.

He later admitted the punch could have killed Staker during an emotional interview on The Footy Show.

Barry was eventually sacked before a game between Western Bulldogs and Geelong Cats at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.
