Buddy Valastro makes a ‘super special cake’ for the medical team treasting his gruesome hand injury

Buddy Valastro is thanking the medical team who has been treating his brutal hand injury in the best way he knows how … with cake.

The Cake Boss star whipped up an enormous confection made to look like New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery for the doctor, nurses and staff at the facility as a show of gratitude.

In September, the 43-year-old celebrity baker impaled his right hand in a freak accident with the pin mechanism of his at-home bowling alley machine and suffered severe tendon and nerve damage.

In a new Instagram post, Buddy posed with his bandaged hand alongside his orthopedic surgeon during a visit to the premiere medical facility.

Buddy’s team at Carlo’s Bakery baked up a gigantic cake that stood several feet high to honor the team that has been working to give the TLC star back the use of his hand.

‘Check out the super special cake I made for Dr. Michelle Carlson, the nurses and staff at @hspecialsurgery as a token of my immense appreciation,’ Buddy penned in the caption.

He added that the style of the cake actually ‘replicates the main hospital there in #NYC.’ The team of decorators also make replicas of doctors scrubs and a lab coats – all out of cake – that lined the bottom of the building.

‘I could never thank them enough for all they have done to help me on this journey to a full recovery ♥️ #roadtorecovery #healthcareheroes #heroes,’ Valastro continued on Instagram.

He’s been documenting the healing process for television in a special, Buddy Valastro: Road To Recovery, where he promised his tireless medical team ‘cake for life’ after all of their hard work.

So far he has had three surgeries on his right hand and faces two or three more procedures depending on his progress in physical therapy. It could also take up to a year for the swelling in his hand to go down.

Several months ago, the reality star suffered a horrifying accident where his hand was impaled by a spike when the baker’s at-home bowling apparatus malfunctioned.

A one-and-a-half inch metal rod pierced his hand three times between his ring finger and middle finger.

His sons Buddy Jr., 16, and Marco, 13, had to use a saw to free their father from the machine and he was hospitalized for treatment.

As to what Buddy’s recovery will look like in the future, it is still unknown whether he will be able to return to making cakes and decorating himself again.

The celebrity baker recently told ET that ‘only time will tell’ if he’ll regain the use and dexterity of his hand.

‘Honestly, I don’t know how much I’m going to be able to do,’ he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Thursday. ‘I don’t really have as much motion, as much strength, dexterity … So, it’s really just a matter of continuing to do rehab.’

Valastro explained that while the scars have healed, he suffered extensive nerve damage and that his fingers will ‘always feel numb and stiff’.

‘I’d say I’m probably at, like, 10 or 15 percent of the strength that I used to have…. It’s just really gonna be a matter of time to see exactly what comes back with the nerve too,’ he said.

Buddy and his family-owned and operated New Jersey bakery, Carlo’s, have been featured on TLC’s hit reality series Cake Boss since 2009.
