Chris Hemsworth picks up his children from school before Byron Bay lockdown

Chris Hemsworth was pictured picking his children up from school on Monday, just hours before Byron Bay was plunged into a snap lockdown.

The Thor star, who shares daughter India Rose, eight, and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, seven, with wife Elsa Pataky, appeared calm as he faced the reality of homeschooling his children while the pandemic rages on in the area.

The 37-year-old actor wore a beige jumper and green chinos, as his barefoot daughter India wandered behind him with an oversized backpack on her shoulders.

Chris kept a low profile in a tan baseball cap and sunglasses, and raised a smile as he chatted to India while walking the family’s dog.

As of 6pm on Monday, Byron Bay, Richmond Valley, Lismore and Ballina Shire were thwarted into another lockdown with restrictions staying in place until at least 12.01am on August 17.

Like in Sydney, everyone in the areas may only leave their home to obtain food, for exercise, medical reasons, to care for a vulnerable person, or for work or education if it’s not possible to do so at home.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian took the drastic step of shutting down the entire Northern Rivers region on Monday over fears a Covid-positive man in his 50s who travelled from Sydney may have spread the virus throughout the community.

The hospitalised man at the centre of the snap lockdown is refusing to assist contact tracers because he ‘does not believe in Covid’, it was later revealed on Tuesday.

Health authorities are trying desperately to uncover where the conspiracy theorist has travelled in the area so they can alert anyone who may have been put at risk.

But so far they have not been able to ascertain where the ‘uncooperative’ man has been despite repeated interviews, with no information appearing on any mandatory QR code check-ins – which he had refused to use.

Local politicians have called the situation ‘ridiculous’ and now fear his refusal to help could see areas including Byron Bay, Ballina, Brunswick Heads, Grafton, Yamba, Casino, Lismore and Murwillumbah and more, remain in lockdown for weeks.

‘He travelled from Sydney with two kids, staying up here in Byron, been out and about a fair amount in the time — it’s disappointing’, Byron Shire Mayor Michael Lyon told the ABC.

‘We’re going through trying to list all exposure sites and work out where he’s been, and he hasn’t been signing in and using QR codes, or any of that, doesn’t believe in it, it’s a nightmare.

‘It’s been very difficult for police and health authorities to track down where he’s been, it’s ridiculous, you have to wonder what people are thinking when it comes to a situation like this.’

Chris and Elsa, 45, are no stranger to homeschooling their children having done it last year during the pandemic.

But Thor actor previously explained he had found the experience challenging, saying in a promotional video for Netflix: ‘Home schooling them is an absolute challenge. It’s three hours of negotiation and maybe 20 minutes of actual work.

‘[My children] just crave interaction with other kids so much, obviously, and that’s a challenge.’

But he did say there were some positives to the process, adding: ‘We’re just enjoying being together. We’ve been dragged all over the world for so many different reasons over the last few years.’
