Crystal Harris recalls being labelled a ‘gold-digger’ for her marriage to Hugh Hefner

‘People would say I was a dumb blonde’: Crystal Harris, 34, recalls being labelled a ‘gold-digger’ for her marriage to Hugh Hefner who was 60 years her senior

Crystal Harris has recalled how she was labelled as a ‘gold-digger’ and a ‘dumb blonde’ when she began dating Hugh Hefner.

The model, 34, who was married to the Playboy magazine founder for five years until his death in 2017 aged 91, began dating him when she attended a party at the mansion with a friend.

Speaking to The Sun, Crystal said: ‘I would get hit with all the stereotypes. People would say I was a dumb blonde, a fake, a gold-digger who didn’t really love Hef. I suffered attacks on my relationship with him, on my looks, on my intelligence.’

When Hef passed away, Crystal received a payout of around £5million and also inherited a £3.5million home in the Hollywood Hills.

Crystal recalled how when she arrived at the mansion for the first time to attend a party, she had a Polaroid picture taken and had to wait in the car park.

She later found out Hef rated girls who wanted to attend A, B, C and D with the A group allowed in first, which he gave Crystal.

Hef moved Crystal, who was 60 years his junior, into the mansion the day after they met and she became one of his girlfriends along with twin sisters Karissa and Kristina Shannon who were 18 at the time.

Crystal soon became his only girlfriend, admitting the couple became ‘dependent’ on each other which she thinks can be ‘dangerous’.

The TV personality, who previously described living in the mansion as like a ‘golden cage’ revealed that Hef began to control her life.

She said: ‘I came to rely on him so much that I didn’t really have a life outside of him. At one point he told me, ‘When you start doing things away from the relationship, that’s when it ends’.’

Hef proposed to Crystal with a £50,000 diamond ring at Christmas 2010, however the proposal left her feeling so overwhelmed that they briefly split up.

Crystal was on the cover of Playboy at the time, announcing her upcoming wedding to the businessman.

After she moved out, it was too late to change the issue so Hef stuck a ‘Runaway Bride in this issue’ sticker on the cover.

They eventually reconciled and married on New Year’s Eve, with Crystal saying Hef treated her much better for the rest of his life.

The model was shocked when Hef died of sepsis brought on by an E. coli infection as he had always been in good health.
