David Genat reveals he was ‘always in calorie deficit’ in order to maintain a slim male model body – and how he overhauled his health and fitness

David Genat has revealed it is not just female models who suffer the pressure to stay slim for the runway. 

The male model and reality star, 41, says he once cut calories in order to maintain the figure expected of him.   

‘During my modelling career I had to be a certain size to fit into sample clothing and it was something I struggled with because I’m a big dude,’ he told The Daily Telegraph on Saturday.

‘At six-foot-three, I was always in a calorie deficit and doing lots of cardio which I hated,’ he added. 

Over time, David says he changed his attitude to his health and fitness and stopped restricting himself.   

‘As I got older I wanted to feel and look strong and I started focusing on lifting weights and eating the correct amount of protein and carbs,’ he says.

‘Learning about fitness over the years and how it evolves with your age and body is what has kept it so interesting for me.’

David started modelling in 2002, and has walked runways and appeared in campaigns for top labels such as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren. 

He was was the Sole Survivor of Australian Survivor: All Stars, which aired in 2020, and previously competed on Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders in 2019.

David has been appearing on Celebrity Apprentice Australia in recent weeks. 

The model’s time on the show is now up, with Lord Alan Sugar firing him during Sunday night’s tense boardroom meeting following a pet viral video challenge.   

With his quick firing, David admitted to being ‘super salty’ as he left the building. 

‘This is not the result I wanted obviously. I’m a bit psycho when it comes to winning. I’m very salty. I’m super, super salty,’ he said.
