Demi Lovato says brief engagement to Max Ehrich helped clarify her sexuality

‘I started realising how queer I really am’: Demi Lovato reveals how her fleeting engagement to Max Ehrich helped clarify her sexuality and admits hooking up with a girl ‘felt better’

Demi Lovato has spoken candidly about how her engagement to fellow actor Max Ehrich helped her on her journey to self-discovery in her sexuality.

The former Disney star, 28, became engaged to Max in July last year before calling things off in September and in her cover spread for Glamour she admitted that their relationship was an eye-opener to the extent of her queerness.

She said: ‘When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am. This past year, I was engaged to a man and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign.’ I thought I was going to spend my life with someone…

‘Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.’

Demi and Max’s engagement stunned fans when they revealed they were set to wed after just a few months of dating, yet they later announced the end of their union.

She confessed that she has been intimate with a woman, which she said ‘felt better’ than her experiences with men, but she is hesitant to label herself just yet.

On her sexuality, she said: ”I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am…

‘I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do. I hooked up with a girl and was like, ‘I like this a lot more.’ It felt better. It felt right…

‘Some of the guys I was hanging out with—when it would come time to be sexual or intimate, I would have this kind of visceral reaction…

‘Like, ‘I just don’t want to put my mouth there.’ It wasn’t even based on the person it was with. I just found myself really appreciating the friendships of those people more than the romance, and I didn’t want the romance from anybody of the opposite sex.’

Demi then spoke about her journey through sobriety after her near-fatal 2018 drug overdose, which saw her suffer three strokes and a heart attack after overdosing on oxycodone laced with fentanyl before being revived with naloxone.

In her Glamour chat, she admitted that while she has recovered from the demons that she overdosed with, she is not entirely sober.

She said: ‘I called [her recovery case manager] and was like, ‘Something’s not right. I’m living one side of my life completely legalizing and this other side following a program that’s telling me if I slip up, I’m going to die…

‘I think I want to try this balance thing in the substance side of my life, too.’ She continues that her team was worried yet supportive. ‘They were like, ‘She deserves this opportunity to make that choice for herself.’ So I did.’

Discussing pressure she feels, Demi went on: ‘My fans react when I colour my hair. If they didn’t like it, I saw it. It reignited that fear inside of me of being who I really am.’
