Dune FINALLY crosses $100million at the US box office one month after release (and simultaneous debut on streaming platform HBO Max)

Dune has finally crossed the $100million threshold at the US box office a month after release and a simultaneous debut on streaming platform HBO Max.

The stateside earnings now bring Denis Villeneuve directed film to a global total of over $370million.

The film which is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel made $400K on Thanksgiving Day on Thursday which brought it to a domestic total of $100.1million on the 35th day of its release.

Nine digits: Dune has finally crossed the $100million threshold at the US box office a month after release and a simultaneous debut on streaming platform HBO Max

The only other Warner Bros. film to have reached that same mark with a simultaneous release on HBO Max was Godzilla vs. Kong which did so after 12 weekends.

Director Villeneuve was not a fan of the film studio’s decision to release all films under their banner both in theaters and the streaming platform as he blasted the move in December 2020.

The 54-year-old French Canadian filmmaker wrote an op-ed for Variety in which he vented his frustrations over the major studio’s move.

He wrote: ‘Warner Bros.’ sudden reversal from being a legacy home for filmmakers to the new era of complete disregard draws a clear line for me.

‘Filmmaking is a collaboration, reliant on the mutual trust of team work and Warner Bros. has declared they are no longer on the same team.’

Villeneueve was also not pleased to have found out about the pivot just as everyone else did.

He explained: ‘I learned in the news that Warner Bros. has decided to release Dune on HBO Max at the same time as our theatrical release, using prominent images from our movie to promote their streaming service.

‘With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here.’
