OMG: EastEnders fans were left reeling after Stuart Highway revealed he had killed DI Thompson the night of Ian Beale’s brutal attack

He said: ‘I swear it’s not what i intended to happen. I was just gonna shake him up I would never… you know me, I’m a gentle guy.

‘Yes I’ve had my moments in the past, I just got this rush of blood to my head. Standing up for someone I love.

‘I mean, he’s my little brother. Thompson. Callum’s boss. He was giving him a hard time so I was just going to talk to him. Scare him a little bit. You know, dark alley, get in his face.

‘But then he came at me and got really lippy and I just defended myself and he just… one minute he was there. The next out, like a light.’

As Rainie asked where the body was now, Stuart said: ‘He’s downstairs in the fridges, I burnt his clothes in the allotment.’

He added: ‘I’ll go, you cannot be mixed up in this.’

Rainie responded: ‘We’re in this together, for better or worse.  I am proud of you for being honest about the dead man in our fridge’ with Stuart retorting: ‘I’m proud of you for being honest about the drugs.’

A smiling Rainie added: ‘We’re pretty messed up aren’t we’ before the couple raced to the bedroom.

Fans were left shocked at the scenes, with one writing: ‘OMFG When Stuart said “I mean he’s my little brother” – I was so shocked, I mean I expected him to do something to DIDH, but to kill him!

I’m worried, I can totally see Callum saying he did it, to save Stuart , he’d absolutely sacrifice himself, due to guilt!

Another wrote: I’m LIKE DYING ABOUT #EastEnders RN OMD THAT ENDING THO I CANT WHY DO I LOVE RAINE AND STUART.’

A third typed: ‘OK after reading about Sharon thought I’d give #EastEnders another go. Just saw tonight’s. Last time I saw Stuart & Rainie, they were wanting a baby.

‘Tonight she’s on crack, he’s a murderer, the body’s in the fridge, but it turns them on? Who is writing this? Quentin Tarantino?!’

It remains to be seen whether Ian can find out who is responsible for the identity of his attacker.

Ian’s attack already has a long list of suspects, and the storyline will be extended beyond the festive period as viewers eventually discover what happened before the unconscious businessman was discovered by Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean).

Viewers have already been given one piece of the jigsaw, with Albert Square regular Tina Carter claiming Ian lashed out at her shortly before he was attacked, leaving her with a split lip.

Speaking to sister Shirley about the incident, which left her covered in blood, she said: ‘Things flared up in the Square so I followed him into the house.

‘Things got heated and I hit him and he hit me, I wasn’t going to stand for it so I went for him.

‘He tripped and he fell and he hit the table. He was dazed when I left the house. Supposing he left the house and went to the Vic and passed out…’

However, the true identity of Ian’s assailant will remain a closely guarded secret until Christmas.

A source said: ‘People are queuing up to cave Ian’s head in. As far as legendary EastEnders characters go, Ian is up there with the best so this storyline will leave viewers shocked.

‘He has no shortage of enemies so exactly who attacked him and left him for dead will be the focus of the weeks that follow.’
