EastEnders viewers were crying tears of joy on Thursday as fan-favourite couple Ben Mitchell and Callum Highway finally got engaged.
Despite a few mishaps the pair finally popped the question to each other in a moving balcony scene, sparking a slew of tweets from fans claiming it’ll be soap’s ‘wedding of the year.’
It’s been a rocky road to happiness for Ben and Callum fraught with lies and crime after sharing their first kiss in June 2019, so it was no surprise that their engagement delighted viewers.

Throughout the episode Ben (played by Max Bowden) had been planning to pop the question to Callum (Tony Clay), enlisting the help of his young daughter Lexi to make it the perfect proposal.
But unbeknownst to him Callum had also been planning a proposal of his own, which he began when the pair met outside the Queen Vic.
Realising he’d been pipped to the post, a furious Ben shouted: ‘Lexi is going to kill you!’ and stormed off.

Has he blown it? Ben warned Callum to stop before dashing away, leaving fans terrified their dream proposal had gone up in flames
Fearing he’d blown his chance to make an honest man of Ben, a devastated Callum wandered over to the Prince Albert, where he was greeted by his friends and family holding up signs bearing the words: ‘Will you marry me?’
Ben then appeared on the balcony with an enormous bunch of flowers and after being joined by Callum the pair proposed at the same time, and no surprise the answer was a resounding yes.
The episode ended on an uplifting note with their family cheering down below as fireworks filled the sky.

Fans soon flooded social media with their own reaction to the romantic scenes, with some already branding it soap’s ‘wedding of the year.’
One wrote: ‘Morning all. Happy Friday how am I waking up in a world where Ben Mitchell and Callum Highway are engaged it still doesn’t feel real, it did actually happen right, it’s not just a dream we all had.
‘I really hope we see them tonight been happy and loved-up.’
Another added: ‘OMG that was so beautiful I’m so happy for the boys,’ with a third tweeting: ‘That episode had everything and encapsulated their past, present and future. Here’s to the wedding of the year.’
A viewer also tweeted: ‘It had the perfect mix of comedy, romance, drama – it just had EVERYTHING!
‘What was created under the restrictions was incredible, hats off to everyone involved in making the #Ballum scenes so beautiful and ones that us fans will treasure forever! I’m off to buy my hat.’
One fan responded to that tweet: ‘Yeh had it all loved it was beatiful and funny and queen Lexi sorting everything out for her two dads.
‘EE created something brilliant with SD in place made it all look natural and the scenes were amazing for our Ballum boys who are now engaged.’
A viewer also penned: ‘Last night’s EE felt really special. The chemistry between you and Tony is incredible Max, and it stands out even more than usual since the filming restrictions were introduced.
‘I adore your scenes together and I’m exciting to see what happens next for the incredible #Ballum.’
An elated viewer posted: ‘Truly amazing and beautiful proposal! Ben and Callum and finally engaged and can call themselves fiancés. I’m so happy! I really love it!’

Due to social distancing measures, EastEnders bosses had to get creative to film the romantic scenes, using stand-ins and clever editing so Ben and Callum could share a sweet kiss and embrace following their proposal.
It comes after actors Max and Ben said there had been an ‘amazing reaction’ from fans to Ben and Callum’s romance.
The characters’ relationship has been affectionately dubbed ‘Ballum’ by viewers with Max saying they ‘jumped on board’ the romance right away.

Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of The One Show, he said: ‘It’s always been an amazing reaction, when you’re telling stories that are limited across certain communities it’s always important you get them right.
‘The fan base for EastEnders are incredible and they jumped on board the Ballum ship right away.’
Tony also appeared on the chat show and spoke about his character Callum realising his sexuality.
He said: ‘Callum was with Whitney at the time, still trying to find himself. “I’ve met a beautiful girl, get married, have some kids”.
‘Ben Mitchell comes along and change his mind, makes him realise this is who the true version of himself is.’
