Gillian Anderson cuddles up to pet dog Stella as she pokes fun at her single status after split

Gillian Anderson has got a new companion after splitting from her long-term boyfriend, The Crown creator Peter Morgan.

The actress posted a Twitter selfie on Sunday as she snuggled up to her new pet dog, who she told fans was named Stella.

Gillian flashed a big smile as she cuddled the pet pooch – whose name could be a nod to her character in hit drama The Fall.

She poked fun at her new single status, captioning the sweet photo ‘Meet my new girlfriend Stella.’

The X-Files actress, 52, and Morgan, 57, who were together for four years, are said tohave parted ways amicably after their relationship ran its course.

The Daily Mail exclusively revealed on Thursday that the pair had broken up, with  Baz Bamigboye reporing they had split due to ‘various work commitments and family logistics’ but ‘remain great friends’.

Representatives for Gillian and Peter declined to comment to MailOnline.

Reports that Gillian had found love with Peter first broke in October 2016 when The Daily Mail’s Sebastian Shakespeare confirmed she was telling friends about dating the screenwriter.

Gillian who lives in London, was at a party in New York with Peter to promote The Crown, where she was overheard telling friends they were in a relationship.

Peter, whose cinematic hits include The Queen and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, was married to Lila Schwarzenberg – born Princess Anna Carolina zu Schwarzenberg – until 2014. He already has five children with her.

Since the relationship revelation, Gillian has supported Peter when The Crown went up for a nomination at The Golden Globes.

Gillian has daughter Piper, 26, with ex husband Clyde Klotz, who she was married to from 1994-1997.

She also has sons Oscar, 14, and Felix, 12, with ex partner Mark Griffiths, who she dated until 2012.

The Fall star was also married to documentary filmmaker Julian Ozanne from 2004-2006.

In January this year, Gillian revealed it ‘would be the end’ of her relationship with her screenwriter partner if they ever moved in together and that she preferred the pair of them living in separate homes.

The Sex Education star told The Times she liked that ‘there is nothing locking us in’ by living separately, adding that they don’t have to fear how they would manage the logistics should they ever split in the future.

Speaking about her relationship with Peter, Gillian said: ‘If we did, that would be the end of us. It works so well as it is, it feels so special when we do come together. And when I am with my kids, I can be completely there for them. It’s exciting.

‘We choose when to be together. There is nothing locking us in, nothing that brings up that fear of ”Oh gosh, I can’t leave because what will happen to the house, how will we separate?”.

‘I start to miss the person I want to be with, which is a lovely feeling. And it is so huge for me to be able to see a pair of trousers left lying on the floor at my partner’s house and to step over them and not feel it is my job to do something about it!’

Back in November Gillian insisted she had ‘very clear boundaries’ with her partner Peter when they worked together on series four of The Crown.

Gracing the front cover of Harper’s Bazaar, Gillian told the publication:  ‘For our own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries.

‘I am not going to comment on the script, but you are not allowed to comment on the performance!’
