Gina Gershon is standing up for her director Woody Allen while promoting their new film Rifkin’s Festival.

The 59-year-old actress was joined by her co-star Wallace Shawn in a new interview with Chicago’s WGN when she was asked about the controversy surrounding the 86-year-old filmmaker.

Allegations recently re-surfaced that Allen sexually assaulted his adopted daughter Dylan when she was just seven years old, though Gershon was disappointed that the interviewer started their chat with the controversy.

When asked about the controversy, Gershon said, ‘If they’re against it, they just shouldn’t,’ adding she took the job because Allen, ‘is a genius.’

‘You know what, it serves no one to keep great artists from working, even the alleged victims, right?’ Gina continued.

‘And Woody Allen, you know, it makes me a little sad that that’s how you lead this whole talk, talking about that whole controversy instead of talking about what an incredible artist he is,’ she added.

‘For me as an actress, he’s been inspiring me ever since I can remember. So I was really thrilled to work with him,’ Gershon said.

Shawn even contended that what Dylan alleged happened, ‘didn’t actually happen,’ adding he felt Allen, ‘is an innocent man and it’s an injustice that we’re even talking about this.’

Gershon added that it is a, ‘family matter’ and ‘not really any of our businesses,’ though the interviewer added it is, ‘a great interest to many people.’

‘In this world that we’re living in right now it’s a little bit tricky to even talk about it because things are pulled apart and put on social media and clickbait, and no one is safe,’ Gershon said.

She said it’s, ‘sad,’ and she thought in this country, ‘you’re innocent until proven guilty, because if the opposite were true, we’d all be canceled.’

‘That’s how I feel. It’s a weird time in the world. This is a five-hour conversation and we can only… it’s a dangerous thing,’ Gershon added.
