He is one of the most recognisable faces in Australian television thanks to his decades-long tenure as Alf Stewart in Home and Away.

However, actor Ray Meagher, 76, left his fans in shock as he debuted a brand new look in a recent post shared on Instagram.

Gone were his wide-brimmed straw hat, colourful checked shirt and chinos made famous by his character since he began on the show in 1988.

Home and Away’s make-up artist Laura Vazquez shared an Instagram image of her posing with the veteran actor.

A black baseball cap replaced Ray’s signature straw hat, and he shunned his love for colours and patterns with a black top and shorts.

‘Wow the first time I’ve ever seen his bare legs,’ a stunned fan commented on the photo.

One person noted: ‘Almost didn’t recognise him’ while another echoed: ‘Doesn’t look like him’.

A fourth wrote: ‘Hardly recognised Ray without his usual attire and iconic hat. 

‘Love this man and his character Alf reminds me so much of my late Dad, straight to the point if he had to say something he said it.’

Ray debuted on the popular Channel Seven soap back in 1988.

Over thirty years later, Ray has the honour of being the longest-serving soap actor in the country.

His fellow cast member Lynne McGranger comes in second place.
