‘I turned fat’: Ed Sheeran says he gained weight from consuming huge portions in America

Ed Sheeran has admitted consuming huge food portions in America made him ‘fat’ and he once projectile vomited after winning an ice cream eating competition while staying with Taylor Swift.

The superstar, 30, said he now asks for the size of his meals to be ‘halved’ when he visits the States after he gained weight trying to keep up with the country’s oversized helpings.

In 2013, Taylor, 31, encouraged Ed to complete the Big Kahuna Challenge in Rhode Island, which resulted in him being violently ill after gauging on two litres of chocolate ice cream topped with gummy bears.

Ed said: ‘I used to be a pizza and chips man and that’s all I ate but when I started travelling the world my thing of it was if a whole culture goes ‘this is our thing’ and ‘we love it’ then I’m going to give it a go because when you go into any restaurant and there’s a chef there and they specialise in something it must be good.

‘We never wasted anything and that’s the hardest thing about eating in America because the portion sizes are huge. I used to always finish them but then I turned into a fat c*** and now when I go back, I have to ask can you half or quarter it.’

The Bad Habits singer recalled feeling under ‘pressure’ to impress Taylor and a group of her fans that witnessed him take on the ice cream eating challenge, ending with him ‘shivering’ and ‘being sick all over the floor.’

Speaking to Ed Gamble and James Acaster on the Off Menu podcast, he said: ‘I was 22 and on tour with Taylor Swift and she had invited my family to go and stay with her. She had invited us to her place in Rhode Island and so we got there, and she said there’s this great little ice cream place in the town.

‘We went there, and they had this ice cream eating competition called the Big Kahuna Challenge and at this point, I was like I can do this, I know I can do this, and it was something crazy like two litres of ice cream and I was like I can do that.

‘I’m there with Taylor and my brother and they bring this ice cream out but you have to add toppings and I stupidly said gummy bears, which are going to fill you up so I start eating this thing and I get halfway through and go ‘I am killing this’ and because it’s Taylor lots of fans started turning up so in the end there are 20-30 young girls going ‘you can do it Ed!’

‘I get to three quarters and I start shivering and I’m like man this is actually really f***ed up and I’m there shivering, and I have one and a half litres of ice cream in me with these gummy bears but I’ve got the pressure of these kids watching me and Taylor is playing Eye of the Tiger and my brother still says to this day, and I’ve had a lot of achievements in my life, my brother still says the proudest he’s ever been is when I finished the Big Kahuna Challenge.

‘I finish it and everyone’s like ‘yay!’ and I say I need to go to the toilet and when I say I projectile vomited out of my nose, ice cream, and its chocolate ice cream and it goes all over the floor of the toilet. And I’m like there are 20 kids in here and they’re going to think I s*** all over the floor, then I had to clean it up.’

During an appearance on a Swedish TV show this week, Ed confessed to having ice cream and martini ‘binges’ that have caused him to be physically sick in the past.

He said: ‘I have a very addictive personality. Very, very addictive personality. I’m reading Elton John’s book at the moment and there are so many things that he did that I do.

‘He would be like, “I would just go on an ice cream binge and eat four f****** desserts until I throw it up”, and I was like, I’ve done that before.

‘Or his martini binges, where he sees how many he can drink. And I’m like, I’ve done that before too.’

Ed, whose new album = is released later this month, revealed he sends a ‘stack of ten lasagnes’ to friends when they give birth after becoming a father himself made him realise mums are often ‘forgotten’ because gifts tend to be for the baby.

He said: ‘Everyone sends stuff for the babies firstly but they always forget about the mother.

‘It’s a massive change and a massive shift and birth itself is pretty f***ed up and the best thing to do is to send scented candles or a nice bath salt and frozen lasagnes so they can put it in the freezer and not think about it, so I usually send a stack of ten – it’s thinking ahead. I’m saying from having a kid I realised f***.’

The songwriter announced the birth of his daughter Lyra, who he shares with wife Cherry Seaborn, last year.

He said friends sent unusual cards to congratulate him on his daughter’s arrival, including designs with his face on, which he has no commercial affiliation with.

He said: ‘There are unofficial cards of me, which is a loaf of bread with my face on it and I’m like someone is getting paid for that, but it isn’t me.

‘I get sent them as birthday cards, there’s one that says Egg Sheeran as well with me on an egg but they’re in like Marks & Spencer and stuff and I see them and I’m like who’s sectioning this because it’s not us.

‘I got sent them as cards for when my daughter was born being like ‘congratulations’ I’d open one up and think that’s such a weird card to send.’
