I’m A Celebrity’s Toni Pearen says she’s ‘heartbroken’ to learn that Jack Vidgen and Abbie Chatfield are targeted by online trolls – as she praises the pair for being ‘sweet’ and ‘hardworking’

Toni Pearen has publicly defended fellow I’m A Celebrity contestants Jack Vidgen and Abbie Chatfield, after learning that the pair are often the targets of online bullies.

In an interview with New Idea on Wednesday, the 48-year-old actress said she felt devastated for her young co-stars.

‘You can’t even imagine what [constant online trolling] would do to them,’ she said.

‘Knowing who they are now and how sweet and sensitive and hardworking they are, I just don’t think anyone has the right to judge anyone else.’

She added: ‘I think trolling is a weak man’s game, it brings people down for their own gain and I don’t think any good comes out of it – it just breaks my heart.’

Toni said that the comments on her own social media are usually much more positive, but she admitted it would only take one negative remark to make her upset.

‘I’m 48 years old and I still obsess about the one bad comment, and no matter how many times you tell yourself to not pay any attention to it, it still does, it harps on you,’ she confessed.

She praised Jack, 23, and Abbie for their resilience, particularly at such young ages, and described them as ‘rays of light’ in spite of the bullying they’ve received.

Speaking to his campmates in a recent episode of I’m A Celebrity, Jack admitted that people on his social media will often ‘play on the gay thing’ and ‘play on the looks thing’.

Abbie, 25, said she was sympathetic after also experiencing bullying following her stint on The Bachelor in 2019.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph earlier this month, Abbie revealed she receives abuse and death threats on a daily basis.

‘I get trolled every day. It ranges from “you’re an idiot” to instructions on how to kill myself, reasons why I should kill myself or death threats,’ she said.

While Abbie sadly admitted she’s become accustomed to the vitriol, it still affects her at times.

‘It does mess with my head a bit personally. I have weeks where I can’t look in the mirror because I get told I am revolting at every turn,’ she added.

Meanwhile, in an interview with 9Honey back in 2019, Jack admitted: ‘People are always gonna say what they’re gonna say. I’ve dealt with it before and I’ve grown a thick skin, and I know that there’s lots of people that love to hate.’
