‘I’m cancer-free:’ Kathy Griffin opens up on health after having half of lung removed during battle with lung cancer

Kathy Griffin said she was declared cancer-free by doctors, as she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday.

‘I’m cancer-free,’ the 61-year-old comedian said on the ABC late night show. ‘I don’t know why, I had a tumor, right? And I’ve never smoked, and it was in there for 10 years. So get this, they took it out and found it in another scan.’

The Emmy-winning comic, who had half of her left lung taken out earlier this year, told Kimmel how her doctor looked to appeal to her sense of humor in explaining the medical procedure.

The latest: Kathy Griffin, 61, said she was declared cancer-free by doctors, as she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday

‘So I go in, and he’s like describing how they take half your lung out, and he goes, ‘It’s kind of a like a balloon,”‘ she said. ‘So, we do it laparoscopically and we poke it, then he goes, “And when we take it out, kind of looks like a used condom.”

‘And then he goes, ”You can use that.” And I just did – and insurance covered it.’

The Oak Park, Illinois native opened up about how her vocal cords are still on the mend, as she spoke in a higher tone.

‘It will heal, but I’m sort of enjoying it,’ Griffin said. ‘I’m a good two octaves higher, I think … it’s higher than Mariah Carey.’

In the exchange with Kimmel, Griffin said she was ‘very slowly getting un-cancelled’ more than four years after her career took a hit in 2017 after she held a replica severed head resembling that of then-President Donald Trump.

‘So you guys know I’m cancelled, right? Like, I was like, cancelled cancelled,’ she said. ‘And so I’m very slowly getting un-cancelled.’

She likened the scandal to the recent controversy surrounding Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar after he posted a clip in which he was depicted committing violent acts toward President Joe Biden and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Griffin said, ‘And you know that guy Paul Gosar made a video, and I was back in the news again? So anyway, so I think I’m gonna get un-cancelled. I think I’m an actress again, guys.’

Griffin commended Kimmel for sticking by her in the time since the Trump controversy.

‘By the way, you are really, really, [one] of the people I can count on one hand that rejected my cancellation,’ she said, to which he said, ‘Yes, it was ridiculous.’
