Inside Jackie ‘O’ Henderson’s weight loss journey

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson has embarked on a quest to shed 15kg after joining Weight Watchers as a celebrity ambassador.

The KIIS FM radio host, 46, announced the exciting news on Tuesday, telling fans she’s determined to kick her unhealthy eating habits after putting on weight during the Covid pandemic.

Jackie said her weight has fluctuated dramatically over the years, with the mother-of-one sharing her relatable habit of ‘yoyo dieting’.

Fans first began to take notice of Jackie’s weight back in the mid 2000s.

The blonde was very slender at the time, and cruel and false rumours began swirling she was taking drugs to keep her weight down.

Jackie discussed the whispers on-air this April, explaining that the rumour began ‘because she got really skinny’ and that it was started by a ‘few people’ in the entertainment industry who were desperate to start drama.

She then swore on her daughter Kitty’s life that she had ‘never done cocaine’, saying: ‘I’ve just never been interested. I really haven’t.’

Jackie’s weight plummeted by 10kg in 2018 around the time she split from her then-husband Lee in 2018.

At the time, Jackie was accused following unhealthy eating habits to slim down.

Discussing the secret behind her weight loss on air, Jackie told listeners her daily diet consisted of skipping breakfast, a single cup of coffee, one avocado for lunch and a low-calorie dinner.

After eating disorder charity The Butterfly Foundation compared Jackie’s meal plan to ‘starvation’, she defended herself by saying she does not follow the strict diet every single day.

She said at the time: ‘It is not a starvation diet. What I should have clarified is that while I’m doing that [following her strict diet] on some days, I don’t eat that every single day.’

She later continued: ‘I do believe that on the days when I eat less, I feel better about myself, and I feel healthier. I actually feel sluggish when I eat [heavier foods].’

‘It is one of the most stressful things you will do in your life and the stress itself made me lose a lot of weight,’ she said.

In May 2020, Jackie admitted that she was ’embarrassed’ about the weight she had gained while in isolation and was desperate to lose the kilos before starring on The Masked Singer.

The radio star even revealed she was so self-conscious she would no longer let her 10-year-old daughter Kitty see her naked.

‘Over the weekend I was in my bathroom and the door was closed. I took off my clothes because I was going to get in the bath,’ she explained on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

‘Kitty went to walk through into the bathroom and I screamed, ‘Don’t come in!’ And she said, ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘Because I’m naked.’

‘Kitty said, ‘You’re my mum. I see you naked all the time.’ And I said, ‘I know, but I just don’t want you seeing me naked right now.’ Because I’m just so embarrassed about how much weight I’ve put on.’

Three months later, Jackie revealed she’d begged The Masked Singer’s producers to remove ‘unflattering’ footage of her looking bloated on-set after gaining 5kg overnight.

She said she experienced water retention and bloating after eating 80 seaweed snacks backstage the previous night.

Unfortunately, it was too late for a costume change, so Jackie had to squeeze into her dress and felt uncomfortable throughout the taping.

In March this year, Jackie admitted she’d recently gained ‘a lot of weight’ and was dreading stepping onto the scales.

‘I’ve been clinically described as obese before and this was ages ago when I was skinnier than what I am now,’ she said, before adding that she didn’t know how much she weighed.

Kyle demanded that she weigh herself on-air, but Jackie flatly refused.

‘No, no!’ Jackie panicked. ‘I’m doing this in my own private time. I’m weighing myself today actually and I’m dreading it.’

On Tuesday, Jackie spoke on-air about how her weight gain had impacted her life, after becoming the ‘biggest she’s have ever been’ during the pandemic.

‘I stopped wanting to leave the house and was avoiding social outings because I just didn’t feel well, motivated or confident anymore,’ she said, adding that she would spend up to $300 per week on Uber Eats.

The Masked Singer judge went on to explain how her busy lifestyle and early-morning starts affected her sleeping pattern and energy levels.

Before she knew it, she’d slipped into unhealthy eating habits.

‘It can be a challenge to set a good standard for the day when you’re up at 4:30am and running out the door – your whole day and eating schedule can be a little bit out of whack from there,’ she said.

‘I was never cooking for myself, Uber Eats was my best friend. It was expensive and a really unhealthy habit, which made me feel so bad about myself.’

Now, with a goal of shedding 10-15kg, Jackie has joined Kate Hudson, Oprah Winfrey, James Corden, Robbie Williams and Sam Armytage as an ambassador for Weight Watches (recently rebranded WW).

‘I joined WW so that I can feel healthier, be more active, feel good about myself, and fit into my old clothes again,’ the radio personality said on-air.

‘It’s also important to me that I set a good example for my daughter [Kitty] about a healthy lifestyle and approach to eating.’

She hopes that losing weight with WW will help shake off her lingering insecurities, after finding herself ‘worrying about ducking to the supermarket and people saying, ‘Oh, look at Jackie, she’s stacked on the weight.”

‘The reason I approached them was because mum would tell me about how her best friend managed to keep her weight off for years with them,’ she told News.com.au.

‘I have tried every other diet – from cabbage soup to the lemon detox diet – and had never looked into WW before and I just love the flexibility,’ she added, noting that she was ‘thrilled to learn I could still eat carbs’.

As for exercise, Jackie said that following WW’s plan since April had motivated her to lead a more active lifestyle.

While she admitted ‘the last thing I want to do after I have just done breakfast radio is jump on a treadmill’, she is now feeling more energised and walks her dog around Bondi most days of the week.
