Her film is the second recent project about Franklin, after Cynthia Erivo starred as the R&B legend in the second season of the series Genius.

However, Jennifer’s project is the only one of the two that was approved of by Franklin’s estate, and the former American Idol star was handpicked by the late singer to play her in her biopic.

The film features Marlon Wayans as Aretha’s first husband Ted White, who later took over for her father (played by Forest Whitaker) to serve as her manager.

Respect’s release date has been pushed back several times, but it’s currently scheduled for an August release in theaters as the coronavirus pandemic continues to abate.
