Jimmy Barnes reveals the ‘intimate’ activity that strengthened his marriage during lockdown

Jimmy Barnes reveals the ‘intimate’ activity that strengthened his marriage to wife Jane during lockdown – as he prepares to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary

It’s no secret that life in lockdown can put a strain on even the strongest of relationships.

But rock legend Jimmy Barnes, 64, has revealed that being cooped up at home did wonders for his marriage to singer wife Jane Mahoney.

The couple famously uploaded daily videos of themselves performing together in their loungeroom during the pandemic, and as a result, have grown even closer.

‘The intimacy of doing those songs in COVID with Jane, as much as that connected us to the rest of the world and kept us tethered to our other life of touring, it also brought Jane and I closer together,’ the Cold Chisel frontman told The Herald Sun.

Jimmy and Jane married in 1981, and had four children – son, Jackie, and daughters, Mahalia, Eliza-Jane and Elly-May.

They are preparing to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on May 22.

In his memoir, Working Class Man, Jimmy revealed it was a case of love at first sight when he first met Thai-born Jane back in 1979.

‘I’d met a lot of girls in my life, but no one had ever stopped me in my tracks like that girl did.

‘She was way out of my class, but I loved her from the minute I saw her. Jane would change my life,’ he writes.

However, at the time Jimmy – then aged 23 – was dating his housemate Bernadette, and was also linked to a woman named Jan who he had been ‘seeing on and off for a long time’.

Despite this, Jane became the musician’s girlfriend shortly after, and they promptly moved in together.

The family lived in France for much of the 1990s, before returning to Australia and taking up residence in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

Jane is now preparing to join Jimmy on tour in July, as he takes his new album Flesh and Blood on the road.

Inspired by the highs and lows of family life during lockdown, Flesh and Blood features contributions from his musically-gifted extended family.

The album is dedicated to the memory of his close friend, music industry icon Michael Gundinski, who passed away last month.
