Kate Mara says her family’s ownership of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers makes for ‘stressful’ Sundays

Football Sundays can get tricky for Kate Mara.

The 37-year-old actress tells Ellen Monday of the complicated dynamics of family and football, as she’s related to the owners of two of the NFL’s most venerated franchises, the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

‘Yeah well it’s complicated, if everyone’s winning then it’s really happy,’ said Kate, whose paternal great-grandfather Timothy Mara founded the Giants, while her maternal great-grandfather Art Rooney founded the Steelers.

The latest: Kate Mara, 37, tells Ellen Monday of the complicated dynamics of family and football, as she’s related to both the owners of two of the NFL’s most venerated franchises, the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

‘It’s a stressful situation constantly, but it’s also really amazing because someone’s most likely going to win, one of the teams is going to win,’ she said.

The Bedford, New York native mentioned the Giants’ turnaround from 1-7 start to their current 5-7 record, which is good enough to secure the top spot in the NFC East division. (The Steelers remained undefeated at 11-0 heading into Monday’s game against Washington.)

‘At the beginning of the season it was pretty dark for the Giants,’ the Chappaquiddick star said, ‘and now all of a sudden we’re in first place, which is completely mind blowing.’

Mara also spoke to Ellen about her latest project A Teacher, in which she portrays the role of Claire Wilson, who she describes as ‘a teacher who has a very inappropriate and illegal relationship with her students, and the season sort of follows the consequences of those terrible choices.’

She said that due to the show’s racy nature she advised her parents Timothy and Kathleen Rooney ‘they’re going to have to fast forward through some things.’

‘They’ll say things like, “Yeah, we only had to fast forward four times tonight,” but that’s literally leaves probably 10 minutes left of the show – so yeah, it’s complicated for them.’

Mara was chatting with Ellen on a remote stream from a ‘really cool ranch house’ in New Mexico while her husband Jaime Bell, 34, is on location there shooting the Western period piece Surrounded.

Mara and Bell initially met filming 2015’s Marvel film Fantastic Four, in which Kate played Sue Storm and Bell played Ben Grimm/ The Thing. They tied the knot in 2017.
