Kate Walsh announces she’s returning to Grey’s Anatomy for season 18

Kate Walsh will be back on the medical drama that helped make her a star.

On Thursday, TVLine reported that the 53-year-old actress would reprise her role as Addison Forbes Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy for it’s upcoming season 18.

The move comes eight years after her tenure with the series’ universe ending with her spin-off Private Practice’s sixth and final season in 2013.

Back at it: Kate Walsh, 53, confirmed she would be reappearing as Addison Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy for its upcoming season 18 after TVLine first broke the news on Thursday

After her return was announced, Walsh was featured in a video posted to the Grey’s Anatomy Twitter account in which she confirmed the news.

‘Dr. Addison Montgomery is coming back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital,’ she said while showing off a wide smile in the self-shot video.

‘I’m so excited to be home again joining Shonda [Rhimes], Ellen [Pompeo] and the rest of the incredible cast,’ she continued.

‘This season — eighteen! — just wait until you see what she has in store for you.’

The account captioned the clip: ‘I need the day off. For THIS. NEWS!!!’ with excited emojis.

Walsh made a shocking arrival on the series back in the season one finale episode, when she was revealed to be the wife of Meredith Grey’s love interest Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).

She would go on to become a series regular starting in the seventh episode of season two through season three, during which her character Addison supervised the surgical with at Grey Sloan.

Starting in 2007, her character was lured away to Los Angeles, the setting of her spin-off series Private Practice.

Nostalgia: Season 17 featured other return appearances — even from dead characters — including guest spots from Patrick Dempsey (L), Eric Dane and T. R. Knight; still from Grey's Anatomy

Although the first two seasons of Private Practice featured significant Grey’s Anatomy crossover episodes and guest appearances, the connections between the shows dried up in later seasons.

The series ended after its sixth season, though its parent show Grey’s has shown remarkable staying power.

Season 17 featured a healthy dose of nostalgia as Meredith, who was battling Covid-19, had dream sequences featuring her former lover Derek, while other dead characters like T. R. Knight’s George O’Malley and Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan had guest spots.

Last month, Deadline reported that Peter Gallagher would also have a recurring role on season 18.

Grey’s Anatomy returns on September 30 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on ABC.
