Kerry Katona claims she was forced to sell her beloved pet parrot in order to make ends meet before finding fame and fortune with Atomic Kitten. 

The TV personality, 41, is a household name thanks to her chart-topping achievements with the popular girl group, but she admits life was very different during her childhood years in Cheshire. 

Kerry, who filed for bankruptcy in 2008 after accruing £417,000 in unpaid taxes, moved from one foster home to another as a consequence of her mother Sue’s deteriorating mental health and ongoing substance abuse issues.

And she admits times were so hard during her teens that pet parrot Alfie was sold just so she could raise the money to buy basic sanitary products. 

She told The Times: ‘When I was 17 we sold my parrot, Alfie for £20 so I could buy some Tampax. 

‘I had his gig paying e £50 to dance in a nightclub and I got my period, so I needed sanitary towels, but we didn’t have the money, that was the last we heard for Alfie.’

Kerry previously admitted she thought about taking her own life when she was declared bankrupt in 2008.

The media personality was declared bankrupt after failing to pay £82,000 of a £417,000 tax bill, losing her £1.25million home in Wilmslow in the process. 

Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, Kerry said she felt ‘worthless’ because of her financial difficulties.

She said: ‘I wanted to hide away. I felt a mug, I was embarrassed, I felt stupid, I was ashamed. You feel worthless.’

‘It was absolutely awful to the point I wanted to take my own life. I understand why when people get in debt so many actually take their own lives over money. I’ve been there. I was so close to doing it myself.’

Kerry described how she got into the situation, explaining she never learned about money growing up.

She said: ‘I was never taught about money, I was never taught in school, my mum never taught me… I got an accountant and I left it all for them to deal with.

‘I found out I was going bankrupt the day I actually went bankrupt. This tax bill was for £82,000 which was nothing to me at that time…. The money had all gone. 

‘I was completely ripped off and conned, I trusted the wrong people… I was doing drugs, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, I entrusted them with my money so it is my responsibility as well.’
