She’s starred in dozens of films across a decades-long career.

And Kristen Dunst revealed that Spider-Man producers wanted her to ‘fix her teeth’ and create a more aesthetically pleasing smile when she was just 19 years old.

The 39-year-old actress recalled a time where one member of the production team even drove her to the dentist as she chatted with the Independent about the pressures of altering her appearance.

Kirsten remembered ‘producers wanting to fix [her] teeth’ when she first signed on to star as Mary Jane opposite Tobey Maguire in the popular flick. 

Dunst told the outlet she refused to get out of the car when a producer drove her to the dentist to get a procedure.

‘I was like, “Mmmmm, no, I like my teeth,”‘ she recalled. ‘Also, Sofia loved my teeth.’

She was referring to director and pal Sofia Coppola. The pair have collaborated a host of times through the years, including in the 1999 film The Virgin Suicides.

‘It was the first time I was seen as a beautiful woman, and [to] have it be a female who gave me that … it was very empowering for me at that age in terms of the way I felt about myself and my beauty,’ Kirsten said.

Dunst also starred in Coppola’s 2006 adaptation of Marie Antoinette and The Beguilded. 

'She made me feel beautiful for who I was, and that was a very pivotal time in my life to feel that way and to be given that,' she said

‘That’s a weird age,’ the actress added of Virgin Suicides. ‘She just gave me a lot of confidence that I carried throughout my career in terms of producers wanting to fix my teeth … People just trying to change and manipulate young actresses in a way to make them the same. 

‘She made me feel beautiful for who I was, and that was a very pivotal time in my life to feel that way and to be given that.’ 

‘I’ve known Kirsten since she was 16,’ Coppola told PEOPLE when Beguilded was released in 2017. ‘It was fun to see [her] play a part that was so different for her. She plays a very quiet, repressed woman. It’s so the opposite of her personality.’

She added: ‘I always felt big sisterly to her. We have a history but it’s fun to now hang out with her as a fellow adult.”
