Kristen Wiig reveals her role in Wonder Woman 1984 was inspired by the groundbreaking careers of female action stars Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver during the eighties

She takes on the role of Cheetah in the hotly anticipated upcoming movie, Wonder Woman 1984.

And Kristen Wiig has now revealed that her portrayal of one of the most iconic enemies in DC Comics history was inspired by the groundbreaking careers of two female action heroines who hit the big time during the eighties.

Speaking of Linda Hamilton in Terminator and Sigourney Weaver in Alien, the actress, 47, told The Sydney Morning Herald: ‘I am sure subconsciously I was watching all of those movies, taking all of that in.’

Kristen added: ‘Seeing women in those kinds of roles, that was the time, and starting to see more women have those physical roles, [such as] Sigourney Weaver. That was a big one. I mean, Alien.’

Sigourney, who played Ellen Ripley in Alien [1979], and Linda who took on the role of Sarah Connor in Terminator [1984] inspired a legion of fans after successfully breaking into an industry which was dominated by men at the time.

Meanwhile, Kristen also reflected on life and style during the eighties as she spoke about her role in Wonder Woman 1984.

The Saturday Night Live star said: ‘It was very sexualised. The hair was big, the make-up was strong, shoulder pads, heels, tight, high-waisted things.

‘It’s hard to talk about the evolution of fashion and where it ended up [and] how to explain that.

In Wonder Woman 1984, Kristen’s character Barbara Ann Minerva [Cheetah] is the arch-nemesis of the protagonist, played by Gal Gadot.

The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins, who also helmed 2017’s Wonder Woman.

Back in March, Warner Bros. pushed back the June release of Wonder Woman 1984 to August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After being pushed back yet again, it is set to be released in cinemas on December 26.
