Madonna has been teasing fans with updates about a film based on her Madame X Tour in recent months.

In May, the legendary pop superstar took to Instagram to announce that the documentary will be released in the fall, writing: ‘Madame X coming in October!!!’ alongside a photo of herself on stage during the tour’s 75-date run.

The trek – consisting of dates in the United States, England, France, and Portugal – was not without drama behind-the-scenes, which included several show cancellations due to Madonna’s recurring knee injury and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Madame X Tour was in support of her fourteenth studio album, which dropped in June 2019, and marked the first time the iconic artist played smaller venues since she hit the road in support of Like A Virgin in 1985.

It kicked off with 16 shows at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, New York on September 17, 2019.

The schedule would take Madonna to theaters in Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Miami Beach before heading to Europe for another leg of the tour in Lisbon, London and Paris.

The film – which had been slated to drop on Netflix – features extensive footage from the tour and behind-the-scenes clips of the singer-songwriter in all her glory as her Madame X alter ego.

Eventually she would have to battle with knee and hip injuries that forced her to cancel several gigs.

‘I consider myself a warrior I never quit, I never give in, I never give up!!’ wrote the 62-year-old star in an Instagram post in December 2019, when she was forced to cancel a North American date.

‘However this time I have to listen to my body And accept that my pain is a warning I want to say how deeply sorry I am to all my fans. For having to cancel my last show.’

Less than three months later, the tour abruptly ended with a show in Paris, France on March 8, 2020, three days before the planned final date, after the French government announced the ban for gatherings of more than 1,000 people to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Madonna screened the documentary concert film to 12 people in a 500 seat theatre this past April and gushed that she ‘cant wait to show it to the world!!!’

‘Thank you to everyone who worked so hard these last 7 months on post. (and we still aren’t finished) but i see light at the end of the tunnel,’ she added.

Madonna is also working on a movie about her life and career, which she is directing.
