MAFS star Jake Edwards speaks of mental health battle after four-week wellness retreat

Jake Edwards has bravely spoken about his mental health battle following a four-week stint at a wellness retreat in country Victoria.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, the former Married At First Sight star revealed how recording his thoughts or writing them down in a journal fast-tracked his healing.

The 33-year-old explained how he penned his thoughts twice a day at the retreat, and left no longer feeling like a ‘broken man’ but a ‘completely different person’.

Jake shared photos of himself completing farm work and writing in his journal, as well as a recording taken on his dictaphone where he discussed his struggles.

In the recording, the reality star admitted: ‘I really don’t have a sense of who I am at this point in time of my life. I’m realising all this with all these chores, with this time by myself. There’s no music going on in the background.

‘There’s no phone going off every five minutes, there’s no Instagram feed, there’s none of that. It’s just silence if you want it to be, conversation if you want to have it. But if you don’t, you’re in your own thoughts.’

In the post’s caption, Jake revealed how he would record his thoughts ‘every day, twice a day, for the entire four weeks’ at the retreat.

‘This process has helped fast-track my healing and I would encourage everyone reading this to start doing the same routine in their daily lives,’ he wrote.

‘I walked into the farm a broken man who was lost and someone who needed to sort his s**t out. I walked out of the farm a completely different person who is grounded, enlightened and connected to self.’

Jake stepped away from the limelight following his very public split from Sophie Guidolin in May.

At the time, Jake’s management confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that the reality star wasn’t in rehab, but instead took time away in a wellness retreat.

Jake announced he had stepped down from his position as CEO of his mental health charity Outside The Locker Room in an Instagram post earlier this month.

He wrote: ‘Six years ago, following the toughest period of my life, Outside The Locker Room was born through a desire to help others struggling with their mental health.’

‘Over that time I put together a program to educate and support young people which has now been delivered to over 400 sporting clubs and schools across Australia,’ he added.

Jake went on to write that his time at the charity allowed him to ‘connect’ with others and tell his story in a bid to inspire them.

‘It’s been a privilege I will be forever grateful for,’ he said, adding that OTLR needed ‘to find new leadership, with fresh and exciting ideas to take it into the future’.

Jake rose to fame on the 2021 season of Married At First Sight. He was married to Rebecca Zemek, but the pair bitterly split up before the reunion.
