Major update after soccer star is accused of sexually assaulting former girlfriend with three other men

Argentine soccer star Gonzalo Montiel appeared before prosecutors on Tuesday morning for a psychiatric evaluation into the January 2020 rape allegations that were brought forward by his former girlfriend.

The 27-year-old World Cup winner was accompanied by his lawyer and did not respond to questions from several reporters who were waiting outside the prosecution’s office in the Buenos Aires town of La Matanza.

The woman, who has identified herself as Carolina, was dating Montiel and was invited to his birthday party at his parents’ home in the La Matanza neighborhood of Virrey del Pino on December 31, 2019.

Carolina, who also works as a flight attendant, alleges that she was raped by him and at least three other men on January 1, 2020.

So far, only Montiel and his neighbor and friend Alexis Acosta have been charged with sexual abuse with carnal access.

Carolina’s lawyer, Raquel Hermida, appeared in an interview with América 24 news channel outside the prosecution’s office and said that Montiel’s psychiatric evaluation was the last step before the case goes to trial.

‘Without a doubt, it seems to me the best process to determine and condemn the guilty,’ Hermida said.

Hermida said that Carolina ‘was in love in a certain way’ and went to meet Montiel’s family the night she was allegedly sexually abused.

‘Unfortunately, when she got there the situation was one of surrender and sexual abuse and she fell asleep immediately because they drugged her, they put her on alcohol,’ Hermida said.

‘The drugs are proven in the case, it is proven with witnesses and with the other defendant (Acosta),’ she added. ‘In other words, not only do the witnesses talk about drugs, they talk about pharmaceutical drugs, but another defendant also talks about cocaine.’

Montiel’s legal team released a statement following the two-hour meeting and said they were confident he would be cleared.

‘This new procedure will provide evidence that will confirm, as has been demonstrated in the case, his innocence,’ the said.

‘Convincing evidence was provided to the process that exposes Montiel’s non-involvement with the facts that are imputed to him and they are fully confident that the ongoing judicial process will yield the results expected by the defense.’

Montiel is schedule to appear for a second evaluation Friday.

In an April 11 interview with TN news, Carolina recalled arriving in a taxi at the residence of Montiel’s parents and greeting his family in the small patio setting.

After a while, she said went inside the home and was served a glass of Fernet with Coca Cola before she began to feel unwell while dancing.

Carolina remembered texting Montiel via WhatsApp for help.

‘I wrote, ‘Gonzalo I don’t feel well.’ I wrote, ‘I am scared, can you take home?’ He did not respond to all of this,’ she said.

She said she then charged her cell phone and went to the bathroom, where she washed her face and then saw Montiel after walking out.

‘That was one of the last things I saw. From there, I completely lost consciousness, and I woke up on the street, on the sidewalk,’ Carolina said.

‘I saw dirt and I was all wet. And I heard screams, I started to hear screams. His sister was insulting me, she wanted to hit me. I didn’t understand anything. I didn’t understand why her sister wanted to hit me. I completely lost consciousness because I don’t know how I got home.’

Carolina remembered waking up at 8 pm later that day and noticed that she had bruises on her legs. She said Montiel later texted her and told her that she was slept with someone.

‘I responded, ‘Impossible.’ He stopped answering and Gonzalo’s mother called me, Gonzalo clearly gave her my number because she did not have my phone number,’ she said.

‘She told me, ‘My love, they raped you. Put in some (vaginal) suppositories.’ I started to cry, to scream. I didn’t understand anything,’ Carolina said. ‘I said to her, ‘What do you mean I was raped? What do you mean put in some suppositories?”

Carolina revealed she had nightmares of the incident and at one point, remembered  how Montiel was lying on top of her in a humid smelling room while the other two men laughed.

In a video statement that appeared on Hermida’s Instagram on April 10, Carolina claimed that she had sought representation from attorney who were interested in reaching an economic deal instead of presenting legal charges against Montiel and the other suspects.

Montiel, who rejoined La Liga’s Sevilla following a year-long loan to the Premier League’s Nottingham Forest, had denied all accusations.

He testified voluntarily before a judge in June 2023 before being informed he was being placed under formal investigation.

Montiel, who scored the final penalty shootout in the 2022 World Cup game against France, was playing for Argentine iconic club, River Plate, at the time of the alleged rape.
