Mariah Carey reveals the secret to her famous Christmas song

Mariah Carey calls The Project host Waleed Aly the wrong name – before revealing the moving inspiration behind her famous Christmas song

Mariah Carey appeared on Australia’s The Project on Monday night.

And the superstar diva got off to a bumpy start when she called the host, Waleed Aly, 43, by the wrong name.

‘Hello Maleed!’ the 52-year-old cried out cheerily at the start of the chat, with Waleed politely failing to correct her, before later joking that he’s been ‘called lots of things’ and paid the gaffe no mind.

Oops: Mariah Carey appeared on Australia’s The Project on Monday night. And the superstar diva got off to a bumpy start when she called the host, Waleed Aly, 43, by the wrong name

During the interview, which was conducted via video stream, Waleed asked the hitmaker about the inspiration behind her famous Christmas anthem, All I Want for Christmas Is You.

The pop star admitted there was a sad core to the perky track, as it’s themes date back to her unhappy childhood.

‘I grew up not having great Christmases, I grew up wanting that thing you see on TV – everything is happy, it is snowing and everything is beautiful, but I had a dysfunctional family and a lot of issues about myself,’ she admitted.

‘After I wrote All I Want For Christmas is You, very early in my career, I started every year to be able to create what I wanted to do for the holidays,’ she went on.

‘I feel like I’ve grown up with it as well, which a lot of people have, so I used to listen to it and pick it apart and think, “Oh, yeah, it’s pretty good,” because nothing comes close to the classic Christmas songs that I grew up loving, but I have to remember that a lot of people have grown up loving this one.’

‘I have to be thankful for it. It comes from a real place, a place of longing and it’s pretty celebratory,’ Mariah concluded.

Mariah’s uptempo R&B-tinged song has become a hallmark of the festive period and earned Carey the Queen of Christmas title.

The star’s All I Want For Christmas song last year became the first holiday song to top both the U.S.-based Hot 100 and the Official UK Singles chart.

The hit, first released on the singer’s 1994 Merry Christmas album, officially topped the UK charts last December, and Billboard announced the track had returned to the top of the US singles chart.

All I Want For Christmas Is You also broke another chart record – no other song has spent more weeks in the top 40 before eventually reaching number one.
