Mayim Bialik, Bill Whitaker and Katie Couric will serve as guest hosts on Jeopardy! … as show trudges on following Alex Trebek’s death

Celebs including Mayim Bialik, 60 Minutes personality Bill Whitaker and Katie Couric are set to guest host on Jeopardy! as the show continues to feature a changing slate of guest hosts after longtime host Alex Trebek died from pancreatic cancer this past November.

News of the aforementioned trio comes on the heels of news Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will also be among the stars guest hosting in the coming season of the quiz show.

‘Alex was a legend, revered by all of us,’ the program’s executive producer Mike Richards said in a statement. ‘I want to thank our guest hosts, who will not only help all of us celebrate his great legacy, but also bring their own touch to the show.’

Couric will make history as the first female to host the program; the show will also donate to individual charities each guest host chooses, donations the sum of the winnings for the week they host.

Richards told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday that the program was seeking ‘people that are credible giving the clues, people that can actually give the clues accurately, that are going to be able to rule right or wrong on the responses, and that Jeopardy! fans will enjoy in that role, but that will not try to make themselves the star.’

He said, ‘There’ll be a wide range of, I think, big names that you’ll go, “Oh yeah, of course,” and then my hope is that there’s a couple of, ‘Oh, I hadn’t thought of that person, and I’d like to see what that looks like hosting Jeopardy!’

Richards said he’ll be guest hosting the show for a few weeks to give the upcoming hosts ample time to ‘prepare for their appearances.’

The first guest host to follow Trebek – who hosted the show for more than 8,000 episodes since 1984 – was Ken Jennings, who won 74 games in a row to capture the show’s record for longest winning streak, in addition to winning $1 million on JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time a year ago.

‘Honestly, I’m with the audience,’ Jennings said in a clip prior to the show. ‘I don’t want me out here. I want to see Alex out here. I know exactly how they feel when they see anybody else behind this lectern. ‘But there are tens of millions of people who love this show; we love this show, Alex loved the show. I’m just happy to fill in and help out.’

Jennings started taping his episodes November 30, 2020, as the beloved Canadian host had died November 8, less than two weeks he pre-taped his last series of episodes in late October.

Richards, speaking with the Today show earlier this month, said Trebek ‘was in enormous pain’ amid the tapings, but the consummate professional – ‘an absolute warrior’ – soldiered on.

As for his replacement, Richards said Trebek had ‘mentioned a couple of names but he wanted to stay out of that’ on the whole, as ‘no one is going to replace him, and he knew that.’
