Mindy Kaling’s good friend B. J. Novak has already signed up to be the godfather to her two children, and now he’s taking on a new role as Santa Claus.
Mindy revealed late last week in a video chat with fashion designer Tory Burch that the 41-year-old star of The Office would be dressing up as Saint Nicholas to wow her two young kids for Christmas.
The admission comes after B. J. left a flirty comment on Mindy’s Instagram earlier this month in response to her cover photo for Vogue India.
Sweet: Mindy Kaling, 41, revealed last week to fashion designer Tory Burch that her good friend (and ex) B. J. Novak was going to play Santa Claus for her children this year
Tory, 54, brought up the topic when she asked Mindy about her Christmas traditions.
‘What’s fun about when you have your own kids is you can kind of make stuff up and then just decide that you’re going to do that every single year,’ she replied.
This year, Mindy had the idea for an elaborate setup in which her daughter Katherine, three, would be with her in the kitchen making cookies and apple cider while B. J. would sneak into the living room dressed as Santa Claus.
‘We’re Hindu and B. J. is Jewish. So this is like cultural appropriation on our part, to be Christian,’ she continued while laughing.

Putting on a show: Mindy’s oddly complicated plan requires her and her daughter Katherine, three, to bake cookies in the kitchen when B. J. arrives and surprises them from the living room
Mindy’s usual Christmas tradition is to take her daughter to The Grove, an upscale outdoor shopping center in Los Angeles where she can see Santa, but that won’t be possible or safe this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The oddly complicated plan for this year requires Mindy and her daughter to be busy in the kitchen baking cookies.
‘And then all of a sudden we’re going to hear bells from another room, and I’m going to go, “Kit, what do you think that is?”‘ Mindy explained.
Then the two will go to the living room to find B. J. dressed as Santa and lying on the sofa near the Christmas tree while pretending to be asleep.
Worth a try: They’ll find B. J. sleeping on the sofa and pretending to be exhausted from delivering presents
Art imitates life: Mindy and B. J. met while starring on, writing and producing The Office. They dated on and off throughout the show, which was mirrored by their crazy characters; seen in May 2019
Growing family: In addition to Katherine, Mindy has a three-month-old son Spencer. She hasn’t shown either child’s face and hasn’t revealed who their father(s) are
‘He needed to take a rest,’ the writer and comedian clarified. ‘Tory, it’s so complicated why Santa was there, why he was taking a nap. But we’re going to do that,’ she continued.
However, she worried that Katherine would know that it was her godfather B. J. under the Santa suit.
In addition to Katherine, Mindy also has a three-month-old son named Spencer.
She has been intensely private about her children and hasn’t revealed their faces to date, and she has also refused to name who fathered each child.
Both B. J. and Mindy are best known for their stints on The Office, in which he played the temp worker Ryan Howard, while she played the customer service representative Kelly Kapoor.
Both also worked behind the scenes as writers and executive producers on the iconic workplace comedy.
The two were introduced while working on the series, and they had an on–off relationship while on the series, which was mirrored and parodied by their characters’ co-dependent relationship.
Having a laugh: Mindy shared her cover of Vogue India earlier this month, which got a playfully flirty response from her ex
Both Mindy and B. J. have continued to be good friends since their time on the show, though earlier this month he seemed to get a bit flirty with her on Instagram.
Minday had revealed her lovely cover for Vogue India, which featured her in an eye-catching white and red striped dress.
B. J. simply commented ‘Check your DMs,’ which may have been a knowing joke alluding to speculation about their relationship among fans.
