Ne-Yo reveals how the pandemic ‘saved’ his marriage to wife Crystal Renay

Ne-Yo has released his first song for 2021, a track called What If that has the star reminiscing over a past love and what could have been.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Thursday to promote the song, the 42-year-old joked about how the lyrics are ‘very dangerous’ for a ‘married man’, with his wife Crystal Renay ordering him to sleep ‘on the couch’ one night.

The artist also revealed how the pandemic ‘saved’ their marriage as it forced them to not rely on FaceTime and have ‘brutally honest conversations’.

‘What If is a conversation starter, it’s about a relationship and what could have happened if you did what you were supposed to,’ Ne-Yo said on the program.

‘[It’s] a very dangerous song for a married man. My wife was like, “Is there something you want to tell me?”‘

Ne-Yo insisted to his wife that the song is in no way a reflection of his life.

‘”Babe this is not about me, I write about other people’s situations too”,’ he recalled of their conversation, to which she responded, “Hmm you’re on the couch tonight”.’

During his appearance on Good Morning Britain, the Sexy Love singer revealed how the pandemic saved their five-year marriage, with the couple on the brink of divorce.

‘The pandemic saved my marriage. We were talking full-on divorce. It forced us to sit down and talk about our problems and re-connect with our kids. There’s only so much FaceTime you can do,’ he said.

‘In the pandemic, we lost a lot of people, but in my case it helped a lot of instances in my life. We had brutally honest conversations.’

Ne-Yo and Crystal, who wed in 2016, welcomed their third child, daughter Isabella Rose in June.

The couple are also parents to sons Roman Alexander-Raj, three, and Shaffer Chimere Jr., five.

Ne-Yo also has a son Mason Evan, 10, and a daughter Madilyn Grace, 10, from a previous relationship.

The couple exchanged vows in February 2016 and had a short split earlier last year.

They spoke about getting divorced in February 2020 – but eventually salvaged their marriage amid hunkering down during the pandemic.

‘We found a way back to happiness, and I can honestly say we’re better now than we were,’ Ne-Yo told People in June.

The Grammy-winner added, ‘It doesn’t matter how much money you make if there’s no family to take care of after the fact – there’s just lessons learned. Definitely.’

In June, Ne-Yo also appeared on The Talk, where he reiterated the same sentiments that ‘the whole quarantine thing was kind of a blessing’ for his marriage.

‘The quarantine kind of forced us to sit still, block out the noise from the world, you know the world can get very, very loud, and we tend to let the world’s opinion mean more in certain situations than it should,’ he said. ‘We’re actually stronger now than we were before; now, we feel like we can really talk to each other.

‘I don’t know when it happened, but we got to a place where we felt like we couldn’t just say it, you know? You’re feeling something, something’s going on, and you know something’s going on, but for whatever reason, you can’t just come out and say it.’
