Netflix announces reboot of popular nineties teen drama Heartbreak High for 2022… the series that launched the careers of Callan Mulvey and Ada Nicodemou

Heartbreak High was the popular teen drama series of the nineties that saw students tackling racism, human rights and other real-life issues, at the fictional Hartley High.

And now Netflix has announced an eight episode reboot for 2022, that promises to be for today’s younger generation.

The drama, that ran from 1994 to 1999 on Channel Ten and the ABC, launched the careers of Home and Away’s Ada Nicodemou and Captain America’s Callan Mulvey.

‘We haven’t had an unwholesome, rebellious Australian young adult series on screen since the original Heartbreak High, so this is well overdue,’ Netflix’s Director of Originals in Australia, Que Minh Luu, said in an official statement.

‘The new Heartbreak High is for young people in Australia today, showcasing their stories, senses of humour and aesthetics to the world, and reminding everyone that they are much, much cooler than us.

‘It’s also for the 90s kids, fans of the original series who remember what it’s like to feel understood by a TV show, then racking off.

While Ada Nicodemou, 43, may be a household name thanks to Home and Away, it was her role as Katerina Ioannou on Heartbreak High that kickstarted her career.

Callan Mulvey, 45, also got his start on the show as Bogdan ‘Draz’ Drazic, before launching a Hollywood film career.

Other stars of the original series include Luke Jacobz, Lara Cox, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Salvatore Coco and Danny Raco.
