Nicki Minaj has broken her silence over the tragic hit and run that killed her father Robert Maraj, 64, back in February.

The rap icon, 38, took to her website to speak out about the ‘devastating’ loss but admitted that she still ‘can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet,’ in an emotional post on Friday.

Robert Maraj died on February 12 when he was struck by a car between Roslyn Road and Raff Avenue in Nassau County, New York, with the driver of the vehicle that hit him allegedly fleeing the scene.

‘Tho I can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life,’ Nicki penned on her website.

‘I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he’s gone,’ the star continued. ‘Life is funny that way. May his soul rest in paradise. He was very loved & will be very missed.’

At around 6pm on Friday February 12, 2020, Nicki’s father Robert had been walking down the road in Mineola when he was struck by a 1992 white Volvo station wagon. 

The 64-year-old was taken to a local hospital and succumbed to his injuries the following day.

The driver of the vehicle that that hit Robert fled the scene an was arrested several days later by the Nassau County Police Department after turning himself in.

Charles Polevich, 70, surrendered to police after officers tracked him down to his home in Mineola and found his damaged car in the garage. 

He was charged with charged with two felonies, including leaving the scene of an incident involving death of a person, and tampering with or suppressing physical evidence.

‘He was absolutely aware of what happened,’ Detective Lt Stephen Fitzpatrick said at the time. ‘He looked at the deceased and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man. He went home and secreted the vehicle, so he is well aware of what he did.’

Police said that had Polevich stayed at the scene and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, he would have avoided criminal charges.

Subsequently, Nicki’s mother, Carol Maraj, filed a $150million lawsuit against Charles Polevich over the hit and run.

Nicki and her late father had a fraught relationship throughout her life and she has previously spoken out about her difficult childhood and Robert’s substance abuse.

While Minaj has accused her father of being an abusive alcoholic and crack addict in her youth, but eight years ago she said that he was trying to clean up his act.
