NRL: Tevita Pangai Jr makes his professional boxing debut in honour of his stillborn daughter

Tevita Pangai Jr is swapping the footy field for the boxing ring in his first professional fight on Saturday in honour of his stillborn daughter, Georgia.

Ahead of his arrival in Sydney to join the Canterbury Bulldogs on Monday, he will go up against against Gerico Cecil in Brisbane.

The 25-year-old will wear boxing trunks with his late daughter’s initials, GLGP for Georgia Lose Galilee Pangai, across the front after losing her back in August.

He told The Daily Telegraph: ‘Getting let go by the Broncos, losing my daughter and then missing the grand final as well, it’s been tough. 

Through all the struggles so far, he was grateful he and his wife Anna supported each other.

The NRL star also said he hopes to bring awareness to how common miscarriage and stillbirth is following their own experience and conversations with nurses.

He noted that it is particularly hard for women to go through and said: ‘As men, we have to be there for them and support’ their wife or partner.

‘When you can go through it and you become a father, you experience it and you realise, it’s shattering to go through. That is as a man speaking. 

Tevita added of his heartbreak: ‘I also want the people who follow rugby league to understand, footballers go through pain too. I don’t feel the public see us as human.’

Anna gave birth to their daughter Georgia who was still born on August 11 and she shared a heartfelt post of her grief.

She wrote: ‘There will forever be a hole in my heart from losing you my sweet girl. I’m grateful for the time I got to feel you grow in my belly.

‘I know you’re in good hands now and your grandma is cheering to have her first grandchild there with her. I love you with all that I am. Continue to watch over me and daddy. I love you my first born,’ she said.

On August 15, the couple laid Georgia to rest alongside her grandmother who she was named after.

In a follow up post, Anna wrote: ‘Don’t think anything can compare to the heartache of losing your own child, but we’re so grateful to our family for all they have done to help us get through these past few days. 

‘We have felt so much love in spite of losing our little love. We miss you so much already our precious girl. Our Father in Heaven had other plans for our Georgia,’ she added.
