World leaders are descending on midtown Manhattan for the United Nations General Assembly and with them so are protesters taking to the streets of NYC.

Activists demanding an end to fossil fuel financing were arrested outside the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday, according to WABC.

Their arrests came after New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) announced its gridlock alert days for the rest of the year starting with the week of the assembly.

Gridlock alert days are when traffic is expected to be at its slowest and most congested. NBC New York found traffic data showing average speeds drop under four miles per hour in the Midtown Central Business District during United Nations (UN) General Assembly week.

There will be road closures spanning from First Avenue to Seventh Avenue and from 34th Street to 63rd Street. The most extensive delays and closures will be closest to the UN building located at First Avenue and 42nd Street.

President Joe Biden arrived in the city on Sunday causing traffic cause as he took his family to dinner at Italian restaurant Il Cantinori.

As he arrived in the city, streets were blocked to allow his motorcade to pass through. Then traffic built up outside the restaurant located East 10th Street between Broadway and University Place, near the NYU campus, as crowds of people tried to catch a glimpse of the president.

‘The UN General Assembly is a great event each year the city is proud to host, but New Yorkers should do their part in minimizing congestion and seeking alternative modes of transportation,’ said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

During the weeklong assembly heads of state and government will engage in a variety of debates and meetings and review the implementation of the 2030 agenda and its 17 sustainable development goals.
