Oprah reveals the ‘inappropriate question’ she once asked Sally Field about ex Burt Reynolds that still makes her ‘cringe’ today

Oprah is one of the world’s greatest celebrity interviewers, but even she has moments that make her ‘cringe.’

The 67-year-old talk show host said during an episode of Rob Lowe’s podcast, Literally! that she regrets an ‘inappropriate question’ she once asked actress Sally Field, 74.

‘My big mistake: I asked her, “Does Burt sleep with his toupee on?”‘ she recalled, referring to the Oscar-winning actress’ then-relationship with Burt Reynolds.

Regret: Oprah, 67, looked back on an ‘inappropriate question’ she once asked actress Sally Field, 74, during an episode of Rob Lowe’s podcast, Literally!; seen here in 2018

‘I even say now, I cringe to even think that I asked that question. But I asked it because the producers are like, “You have to ask, you have to ask, you have to ask. That’s what everybody wants to know”,’ she continued.

Field and Reynolds dated for several years in the late 1970s. The legendary actor died in September 2018 at the age of 82.

‘And so I asked it, and she went cold on me. She shut down, and I could not get in again,’ she added.

‘It was like, “Whoa, Sally went cold on me on live TV”,’ she went on, saying she had an icy demeanor for the rest of the interview.

‘I deserved it, I deserved it, I deserved it, ’cause that is such an inappropriate question… She certainly didn’t answer it. And then it didn’t matter what else I said.’

‘Meanwhile I still want to know,’ Lowe, 57,  said with a laugh.

Winfrey explained that she felt she had to ask the star about her relationship: ‘Of flubs in the world, this was when I was younger and not living from the point of view of the surrogate, but I did feel a responsibility to ask the questions people wanted.’

The West Wing performer co-starred with Field in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters from 2006 to 2011.

He gushed over the star, but pointed out that he’s aware of that other side of her personality.

‘She’s one of the most amazing actors I’ve ever known, but when Sally goes cold, it’s like Khrushchev in the Cold War. She will bury you,’ he explained.

Oprah had previously discussed the pointed question during a 2005 interview on The Today Show.

‘It was a bad question. I wouldn’t do it today,’ she said at the time.
