Oscar-contender The United States Vs. Billie Holiday starring Andra Day set to be picked up by Hulu
The Billie Holiday biopic starring Andra Day as the legendary jazz singer reportedly is being acquired by streaming service Hulu.
The United States vs. Billie Holiday by director Lee Daniels, 61, currently is scheduled for release in theaters on February 26 by Paramount Pictures, but it has not yet been determined if that will be part of the Hulu deal, according to an article Thursday by Deadline.
It was expected that Hulu would qualify the film for awards season as Daniels desired.

CAA Media Finance has been brokering the deal that is ‘more than double what Paramount’s current deal was’, according to Deadline.
The film’s financier New Slate Ventures was involved in the sale to Hulu and was seeking a return on investment amid the hard hit US exhibition marketplace.
The United States vs. Billie Holiday largely centers on the events surrounding the jazz singer’s narcotics arrest at her home in New York City in 1947 while also examining her struggles with addiction, fame and heartbreak.
The film shows how Holiday was targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting led by agent Jimmy Fletcher, portrayed by 30-year-old Trevante Rhodes, who had an affair with the singer.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday is based on the novel Chasing the Scream: The First And Last Days Of The War On Drugs by English writer Johann Hari, 41, with a screenplay by Suzan-Lori Parks, 57.
The film also stars Garrett Hedlund, 36, as Harry J. Anslinger, who served as the first commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Federal Bureau of Narcotics and targeted Holiday for prosecution.
Following her arrest in 1947, Holiday was released on good behavior in 1948, but was followed for the rest of her life by the Bureau of Narcotics.
