SAG Awards 2021: Daniel Kaluuya triumphs in supporting category while The Crown wins big AGAIN

British stars were once again feted at the prestigious SAG Awards that aired Sunday night in the US.

Daniel Kaluuya was named best supporting actor in the movie category for his portrayal of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah.

And the cast of The Crown were once again victorious with a win as the best ensemble in a TV drama series.

Winner: British star Daniel Kaluuya, 32, was named best supporting actor in the movie category at Sunday’s SAG Awards for Judas And The Black Messiah

So excited: The stars of Netflix's The Crown won the award for best ensemble in a TV drama series and celebrated via Zoom (pictured Emma Corrin, Josh O'Connor, Tobias Menzies, Olivia Colman, Marion Bailey and Gilian Anderson)

Colman, who stars as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix show, gave the acceptance speech in the slickly produced pre-taped awards show.

Appearing like her fellow nominees via Zoom, she read a list of the first names of the supporting castmembers before crediting creator Peter Morgan for the show’s success.

‘Thank you Peter Morgan for writing so many lovely parts, we all loved it, let’s do it again,’ Colman said.

The actress also gave a shoutout to Britain’s National Health Service, adding: ‘We’re very lucky in this very peculiar year to have you.’

Kaluuya, 32, repeated his Golden Globe win and is now a favorite to take home the best supporting actor Oscar at the Academy Awards later this month.

It was his second SAG Award; he won as part of the ensemble cast of Marvel’s Black Panther in 2019.

On Sunday night he dedicated his second win to late co-star Chadwick Boseman, as well as to Hampton who was assassinated in 1969.

Other British winners included Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance who won as part of the ensemble cast of The Trial of The Chicago 7.

The Aaron Sorkin movie took the night’s top trophy making it a clear contender for best picture at the Academy Awards later this month.

Facing the unique challenges of a pandemic-era awards show, SAG-AFTRA’s awards committee decided against a Zoom-heavy affair.

Instead, the awards were handed out in a slick one-hour TV presentation Sunday night made up of pre-produced pieces and acceptance speeches taped ahead of time.

The show, that aired on TBS and TNT, also featured stars talking about being an actor in docu-series-style clips based on the ‘I am an Actor’ segments traditionally dispersed throughout the live SAG Awards telecast.

British talent was represented in the segments by Helen Mirren, Cynthia Erivo, Daisy Ridley and Riz Ahmed.

In a segment about padding their resume when starting out, Erivo, whose breakthrough on film came in 2019’s Harriet, recalled: ‘I put down that I can horse ride, I can sword fight…’

Mirren, however, clarified that she ‘absolutely cannot ride a horse’ and explained that there are ‘two problems with horse-riding’… getting the horse to move and then getting the horse to stop.

Looking ahead, the Oscar-winning actress expressed excitement about being able one day to return to movie theaters.

‘My hopes for the coming year are that we find ourselves in a big darkened [room] with a tub of popcorn…’ she shared.
