Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair safely recreate Cruel Intentions kiss at MTV Movie & TV Awards

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing every industry into lockdown this year, Hollywood has struggled to adjust.

And although there weren’t many new titles to recognize in 2020, celebs will always find a reason to celebrate.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair led the honorees Sunday at the inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time, as they safely recreated their infamously steamy kiss from their 1999 teen classic Cruel Intentions.

The duo was presented remotely with the Legendary Lip Lock Award, as Sabrina Carpenter introduced them from the stage of the awards show.

Gellar and Blair telecasted their acceptance speech from a backyard, as they sat on opposite sides of a patio table. 

The Buffy star joked that their kiss was ‘the single-most awarded kiss in cinema history — you don’t have to Google it, I already did.’ 

They originally took home Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards back in 2000 for the sexy scene, which they recreated onstage.

Blair said of the scene’s lasting impact: ‘I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are.’

Gellar added: ‘It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture… Well, also it was super-hot.’

The ladies then ‘recreated’ the iconic movie moment, going in for the big kiss before smashing their faces against a plate of protective glass, keeping safe from COVID-19, as Gellar concluded: ‘Stay safe, MTV. And, 2020: end soon.’ 

Chadwick Boseman was posthumously honored as Hero for the Ages for his historic run as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Iron Man star continued: ‘He was the most heroic when just being Chad. That’s when he was bigger than anyone he played onscreen.’

Don Cheadle also referenced Boseman’s portrayals of real-life heroes Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson and James Brown: ‘With every role, he created a new legion of fans. He has an incredible power to unify people. The way he lived his life united people behind a higher purpose — and that will be his legacy.’

It comes after Boseman died in August at age 43, following a years-long private battle with colon cancer.

‘So, I’d like to thank Robert Kamen for writing The Karate Kid and creating this character, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of Cobra Kai, for picking up the torch three decades later and giving Johnny new life, depth, humor and a shot at redemption.

‘To Ralph Macchio, for the legacy we’ve shared and continue to share, there’s no Johnny Lawrence without your Danny LaRusso. You’re the best around.’

Hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, the inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards: GOAT took place in lieu of the regular awards show, which usually takes place in June, but was cancelled this year due to the pandemic. 

It was prerecorded with social-distanced appearances against green screens and no live audience, as winners accepted awards from home.
