Based off of a 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson, the Joss Whedon-created series was a major success during its run and resulted in a spinoff, a number of novels and comic books, and various fan productions.

In July of 2018, 20th Television announced that they would be developing a Buffy continuation series, with Whedon returning as an executive producer and Monica Owusu-Breen serving as showrunner.

Many fans of the original series were disappointed to learn that Gellar’s role was apparently set to be recast by another actress.

However, Owusu-Breen later clarified what was the development team was planning for the series and noted that the role would not be recast, rather a new character would be introduced to the series.

The new showrunner stated about Gellar’s role as Buffy: ‘[it] can’t be replicated…I wouldn’t try to.’

She did add that ‘The world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer.’

While Gellar may not be returning for the reboot, other actors have expressed interest in revisiting their old roles, including Anthony Head, who portrayed librarian Rupert Giles in the original show.
