Shang-Chi tops pandemic domestic box office with $196.5M… as critically-panned Dear Evan Hansen earns $7.5M


Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings spent its fourth week at No. 1, grossing $13.3M at 3,952 theaters over the weekend.

With $196.5M and counting, Destin Daniel Cretton’s MCU flick has now surpassed Black Widow’s $186.7M to become the top-grossing movie at the domestic box office during the pandemic.

Deadline reported Sunday that of the estimated 3.2M moviegoers this weekend, a third of the crowd were watching Shang-Chi.

The Simu Liu star vehicle – premiering November 12 on Disney+ – also features Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, and Ben Kingsley.

Shang-Chi currently holds a ‘certified fresh’ 92% critic approval rating (out of 296 reviews) and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trailing far behind in the No. 2 spot was Dear Evan Hansen, starring Tony winner Ben Platt, with only $7.5M domestic box office gross at 3,364 theaters.

Stephen Chbosky’s $28M-budget Broadway musical adaptation about a deceitful teen with social anxiety disorder was watched predominantly by Caucasian women on the East Coast.

All signs point to Dear Evan Hansen holding a dismal 33% critic approval rating (out of 163 reviews) despite a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The emotional drama also features Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, and Nik Dodani.

Rounding out the top five were Shawn Levy’s Free Guy with $4.1M, Nia DaCosta’s Candyman with $2.5M, and Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho with $2.1M over the weekend.

The bottom five were Jungle Cruise with $1.72M, Malignant with $1.5M, Copshop with $1.2M, Paw Patrol with $1.1M, and Love Story with $790K.
