Legendary musician Daniel Johns has revealed the shocking reason why he decided to distance himself from the band that catapulted him to fame, Silverchair.

On Wednesday, the 42-year-old singer confirmed the band would never reform with him as frontman in a new podcast titled Who is Daniel Johns?, after he struggled for years with the darker side of global fame.

Johns – who was just 15 when Silverchair’s first single was released – said he had even got rid all of his memorabilia, awards and mementos, saying: ‘It’s not that I am not proud of it, but for some reason I don’t want it around.’

He then bluntly added: ‘I wouldn’t even get Silverchair back together for a million dollars with a gun to my head.’

In the podcast, a series of dangerous incidents were discussed surrounding die-hard fans who took frightening steps in an attempt to get closer to the frontman.

Silverchair’s former manager, John Watson, told the haunting story of how an older French woman stalked Johns across two continents, stole his mother’s wallet and tried to get to him backstage at concerts using her driver’s license.

‘As I say, 99.9 per cent of people are not like that at all. But the one who is trying to get backstage is that one,’ he said.

Others fans acquired Johns’ home phone number – long before the age of mobile phones – and would call his house all hours of the day.

Another devastating incident occurred happened when a fan with an American accent threatened to shoot themselves if Watson didn’t put the singer on the phone.

Despite Watson assuring the fan the singer wasn’t there and urging them to seek help, the fan continued to make the threat.

‘The person came in over the top of me and said: “Put him on in the next 10 seconds or I am going to shoot myself,” Watson said.

‘(I said) “There are people you can call for help”. And then a bang. I still don’t know if that person killed themselves or they were just trying to talk to Daniel.’

He said another woman called him and said she was ‘pregnant with Daniel’s baby’ while sobbing hysterically.

After learning it was not possible that Johns had ever met the woman in question, she replied: ‘ahh well, it was worth a try’.

The singer was always provided ‘around the clock’ security who followed him everywhere he went, which made him ‘really, really anxious.’

The bombshell new podcast will also feature Johns’ ex-wife Natalie Imbruglia, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, and will unveil new music each week as a new episode is released on Spotify.

‘I’m happy to do it because I think it’s a good vessel to release art,’ Johns added. ‘Above all things, I just want to make art, and I would really love for people to hear it.’

‘And the only way to get people to hear my art is through vessels like this because I don’t want to perform on stage.’
