Success: Singer Tones and I, real name Toni Watson, revealed to Stellar magazine on Sunday why she thinks Dance Monkey was a global mega hit

‘Dance Monkey was a fluke. It was weird [and] that’s probably why it got so big,’ she said of the chart topper.

‘I wrote the song for people on the streets and I busked with it for eight months before I released it,’ she added.

‘I did it with a fresh mind and I wasn’t trying to compare it to anything or compete with anyone,’ she said.

‘Maybe that’s why what happened happened. The next record-breaking song won’t be anything like Dance Monkey.’

Tones and I started out busking on the streets of Byron Bay, NSW, back in 2017.

Her rise to be one of the country’s biggest stars has been meteoric.

Dance Monkey has skyrocketed through the charts since its release, reaching number one in more than 30 countries in 2019.

Despite her success, Tones has dealt with plenty of personal personal struggles coping with fame.

‘I came to a point where I felt I wasn’t good enough, I’m not good enough to play a festival, I’m a busker,’ she told News Corp in May last year.

‘Then I started to realise I am good enough because who the f**k would deal with that? So at the end of last year I decided I wasn’t going to let anything bother me,’ she added.
