An impressed Anton said it was ‘a joy to see someone grow’, while Shirley noted that it was his best dance so far.

Their scores reflected this as Dan and Nadiya finally broke the 30 barrier, earning 31 points on the night.

Ahead of their glittering performance,  Dan revealed that Nadiya accidentally kneed him the face as they were rehearsing for their Charleston.

Lying side by side on the floor of the rehearsal studio, he said: ‘We’re celebrating the end of our training session with a chocolate digestive

‘The Charleston this week – it’s good fun and I can swivel. That’s the high point of the week.’

Pointing at his face, he added: ‘The low point is, can you see? There’s still a bruise here where I got kneed in the face by the Ukrainian queen here.’

Nadiya responded: ‘Are you still talking about that? It wasn’t pretty, we were doing the lift.’

Dan pointed out: ‘There was blood coming out of my mouth, all over the place.’

She apologised profusely, saying: ‘I’m really, really sorry partner. It’s all right.’
