The presenter, 53, filmed every step of his painful battle with the respiratory illness for warts-and-all ITV special Kate Garraway: Finding Derek following his hospitalization in March 2020.

And colleague Susanna, 50, admitted the former political lobbyist – who remains in hospital but is understood to be COVID free – will be full of praise for his wife and her attempt to shine a light on the illness and it’s devastating impact on the wider community.

Appearing on Wednesday’s edition of Good Morning Britain, she said: ‘When she was doing I’m A Celebrity I was so interested in how she was just a superstar and I used to speak to Derek.

‘He told me the story about the bikinis she used to wear. He burst with pride about Kate. He is so proud of her and he will be so proud of her doing this, what she’s doing, and this documentary.’

Sharing her sentiment, co-host Ben Shephard added: ‘I think we can very rightly be very proud as well and understand that all we want for you is to know who Kate is.

‘Thank you for all the extraordinary messages… every single one of those messages she has read and she takes some sort of comfort and support from.’

He added: ‘Lucy, the (Finding Derek) documentary maker did an amazing job, an amazing job under really difficult circumstances.

‘But there are times where it is really hard for her, and she doesn’t have the smile on her face and it is really cripplingly difficult to try and keep going and those messages are a huge, huge support for her.’

Kate had previously thanked a fan for defending her against a cruel troll who branded her ‘shameful’ for making the documentary, which aired on Tuesday evening.

Despite a wash of praise across the board for her ITV show Finding Derek on Tuesday, one Twitter user chose to brand the GMB anchor, 53, ‘shameful’.

Commenting under a supportive tweet from Kate’s colleague Ben Shephard, the troll penned: ‘Absolutely shameful that Kate would film this! It’s more Kate The journalist rather than Kate Garraway the wife!’

In response to this, another tweeter replied: ‘If you can be anything #BeKind I hope Derek’s children can’t read your silly negativity.’

Kate promptly liked this reply, clearly thankful for the support.

Ben’s original tweet read: ‘So proud of my friend @kategarraway she continues to surprise, delight, occasionally infuriate but always inspire me. Thinking of Kate, her family and anyone who is battling Covid or has lost someone close to them to the virus.’
